FAQ

Common Questions

Cosmetic surgery reshapes normal structures of the body to improve appearance, self-esteem and confidence.

Reconstructive surgery is performed on abnormal structures of the body caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors or disease, to improve function and/or approximate a normal appearance.

Reconstructive surgery is typically covered by most health insurance policies, while cosmetic surgery is often not covered as these procedures are considered elective.
Plastic surgery has a changing face. Men are increasingly wanting to feel confident in their own skin, and are finding plastic surgery to be a good option. The two most common plastic surgery procedures for men are pectoral implants (1,054 procedures – an increase of 208 percent from 2013 to 2014) and male breast reductions (26,175 procedures in 2014 – an increase of 29 percent since 2000).
Depending upon what is most appropriate for your particular situation, the surgeon will decide what type of anesthesia to use. He or she will answer any questions you have.
Our staff is specially trained to help you through the recovery process and to equip you with the knowledge you need to heal quickly and safely. It’s difficult to say how each patient will recover as we all tolerate pain following surgery in different ways. Minimally invasive procedures customarily result in less post-surgical discomfort. Operations requiring elevation or tightening of the muscles – such as an abdominoplasty or breast augmentation – can cause discomfort approximately equal to a C-section. Our goal is to minimize your discomfort, so appropriate pain medications will be prescribed by your surgeon, as managing pain improves the healing process.
The amount of time it takes an individual to recover from plastic surgery depends on several factors including the type of procedure, the age of the patient, and overall outlook of the person operated on. Most people need assistance for at least two days after surgery. The decision of when to return to work may be based on the type of work you do. This is a decision your surgeon can help you with.
In general, the results of plastic surgery procedures are long lasting if you maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle. Results may vary by the type of procedure performed.
Your surgeon should be willing to thoroughly discuss the safety and risks of any plastic surgery procedure, as well as the expected outcome. For your safety, ensure your surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, has hospital privileges, and that the surgical facility conforms to strict safety standards, uses licensed personnel to administer and monitor anesthesia, and is accredited. We perform cosmetic surgery procedures conveniently in our Centre Avenue Office. Dr. Baack is also credentialed at Poudre Valley Hospital, Harmony Surgery Center, and Banner Hospital.

The word “plastic” is derived from a Greek word meaning to “mold” or “form.” Today, plastic surgery has evolved as an unparalleled medical specialty – the mastery of which relies heavily on the level of technical skill, artistic ability, and scientific knowledge of the plastic surgeon you choose.

While good credentials don’t guarantee a successful outcome, they can significantly increase the likelihood of it. You want a physician certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, “the gold standard” for plastic surgeons, assuring you your doctor:

  • Has completed at least five years of supervised surgical residency training in an approved program after completing medical school, including at least two years specifically in plastic surgery
  • Has passed comprehensive cosmetic and reconstructive surgery exams
  • Is qualified to perform cosmetic and reconstructive procedures – everything from liposuction and facelifts to intricate wound repair.
Cosmetic plastic surgery is usually considered “elective surgery” and not covered by most insurance plans. Ft. Collins Plastic Surgery may provide some financing options. We encourage you to ask early in the conversation if financing is needed.
